We have just come back from a fantastic family camping holiday in St Lucia area. We chose to go there to escape the freezing cold winter we have had in Lesotho, only to be rained out for the first two days. It was still great though. There is nothing like a camping holiday to bond together as a family. Gemma was "Little Miss Helpful" throughout the few days we were there. She helped do the dishes, a bit of laundry, etc. and to help clean all the "undoing" that Bryce caused.
We were actually due to go to Cape Town to see Gemma's endocrinologist, over this period, because of Gemma's unstable sugars a while back. However, as her sugars had stabilised somewhat, we changed our plans last minute and headed north. Some people may think that we are always on holiday, gallivanting here and there, but most of our trips have revolved around a hospital visit or doctor's appointment. This was the first holiday in a while that we went where we wanted to go without worrying about Gemma. It was truly fantastic. Gemma's blood sugars have been more stable since she has been put back on a liquid diet of Frebini's. We are giving her small doses of chromium daily, which seems to be helping her sugars as well. She nibbled on so many different types of foods over the holiday on her own accord. This type of nibbling doesn't affect her sugars drastically, but it is a huge step in her eating journey. It is amazing what a relaxed and calm environment, with relaxed and calm parents can do!!!! She still has random lows, but once again, responds immediately to foods. We are testing her blood sugars more frequently because of these random lows. Her poor little fingers, but she doesn't even blink when we test her. She has become quite immune to the pain. It is the sacrifice she has to make in order for us to ensure her brain stays healthy without having too many low sugars. We finally got Gemma a Medic Alert bracelet which she wears very proudly and feels the need to show everyone. Bryce is still a happy chappy and growing way too quickly. He is truly a little man now and growing wiser by the day. We are extremely blessed with our two little angels, and although there is a LOT of fighting between them, we can already start seeing the sibling bond forming between the two. My God Bless you all.
